TRAVEL AND HONEYMOON GUIDE: THE QUAINT CITY OF KILKENNY
I am continuing my guides for Ireland this time; today, we are visiting Kilkenny, which is just a quick drive or train ride from Dublin, which makes for a perfect day trip and has so many wonderful things to see and places to explore.
KILKENNY CASTLE AND PARKLANDS
Kilkenny Castle has been rebuilt and adapted numerous times over its 800 years of existence. Restored back to its Victorian time frame, it is a beautiful tour that includes the house, terraced rose garden, woodlands, and a man-made lake. The castle also has a tearoom, trails, and a playground.
You can choose between a self-guided or guided tour, and you can purchase tickets online before arriving up to 7 days beforehand. Be sure to check out their events calendar before planning a visit to catch their Music in the Garden series or other fun activities.
ST. CANICE’S CATHEDRAL AND ROUND TOWER
St. Canice’s is the second-largest cathedral in Ireland. Steeped in history dating back to the 13th century, that features a 100-foot 9th-century tower. It offers self-guided or guided tours throughout the week. The Round Tower is quite a climb but is completely worth it for the incredible view.
JERPOINT PARK
Just outside of Kilkenny, you will find Jerpoint Park. This area features an 800-year-old Church of St. Nicholas with sweeping views of the countryside and the River Nore. Tours are available, but I highly recommend the sheepdog demonstrations, which are a small fee but well worth it to see sheepdogs and herd sheep up close.
TRIM CASTLE
If you are a movie buff, this castle needs to be on your list; Trim Castle was the backdrop for Braveheart. With three stories and a 20-sided tower, all protected by a ditch, wall, and moat, it will live up to the hype of a medieval castle.
