TRAVEL AND HONEYMOON GUIDE: TUSCANY, ITALY
Everyone is off to far-flung destinations this summer, which is so exciting and fun. Here is a recap of one of my favorite summer trips to Italy. It's hard not to have a good time when you have wine, pasta, stunning views, and architecture.
MONTEPULCIANO
Located in Tuscany, this town dates to the 4th century BC. This is such a walkable area; I suggest grabbing a gelato as you explore the city to cool off, especially in the spring and summer. You will find shops, restaurants, piazzas, churches, and museums to explore. The area also features sweeping views of Val d’Orcia countryside.
SAN QUIRICO D’ORCIA
This town is a great stopping point between Montalcino and Pienza to stretch your legs. They have a beautiful garden that is a great place to wander around. You can also visit a stunning church that is from 714.
MONTALCINO
This town is located behind fortified walls with numerous walking paths. What makes this area a must-see is its wine tastings. The world-famous wine Brunello di Montalcino is here. If you haven’t heard of this wine, it must spend two years in a wooden barrel and then four months in the bottle before it is ready to be released, which means it doesn’t go on the market until five years after the grapes are harvested. This area is also home to the Duomo, which is Florence’s cathedral with a Renaissance-styled dome.
ABBEY OF MONTE OLIVETO MAGGIORE
If you are looking for a reprieve from the bustling towns, check out the Abbey of Monte Olivento Maggiore. You will find it amongst the hills of Crete Senesi. It is open to the public, but remember that the monks encourage silence on the grounds. They have stunning grounds and even a winery tucked in the cellar of the Abbey.
Next month, I will be breaking down all of the places you can eat, drink, and stay in the areas. If you want to read and see more of my Italy trip, you can check out my travel blog over on Green Wedding Shoes.
