ROMANTIC WEDDING CEREMONY AT THE LODGE AT MALIBOU LAKE
When Gabe and Steve set out to plan their dream romantic wedding ceremony, they knew it had to be more than just an event. Their journey led them to the enchanting Lodge at Malibou Lake, a rustic fishing and hunting lodge steeped in 1920s charm. Drawing inspiration from the venue itself, the couple crafted a celebration that perfectly encapsulated their love story.
From the very beginning, Gabe and Steve envisioned a wedding with a masculine touch, blending florals and vintage accents to create a unique and heartwarming atmosphere. They chose the rich, warm colors of autumn, embracing the season's beauty. But above all, they wanted every aspect of their special day to reflect who they were as individuals and as a couple. I found it particularly special that Steve and Gabe decided to get ready together; it made for some amazing and heartfelt photos.
The Lodge at Malibou Lake is a historic property shaded by sycamore and oak trees, which served as a stunning backdrop for their love-filled celebration. The couple exchanged vows beneath a lush arch that framed the Santa Monica Mountains, and the theme continued inside the ballroom, where tables were adorned with autumn blooms, dark accents, and gold settings that harmonized with the foliage-draped black chandelier and fireplace.
With the help of their vendor team, Gabe and Steve carefully curated an inviting atmosphere that welcomed their guests to share in their most cherished moments. They also paid tribute to their unique heritages, infusing thoughtful touches that showcased their personalities.
To honor Gabe's mother, who had recently passed, they incorporated purple flowers into the lasso. Purple was a color she held dear, and her blessing for their marriage was a momentous milestone. As a nod to Gabe's Mexican heritage, they included a lasso ceremony, a tradition that represented the blending of their families.
For their ceremony, they enlisted the talents of Mariachi Arcoiris, the world's first all LGBTQ+ mariachi troupe, whose melodious notes filled the air as guests arrived. The musical choices were carefully selected, with classic Pedro Infante songs accompanying their entrance. Gabe and Steve's wedding ceremony was a heartfelt affair, steeped in tradition and marked by the joyful sounds of "La Fiesta del Mariachi" as they became newlyweds.
The ring bearer's journey down the aisle was also a personal touch, with a custom-made valet tray created by their friend, Greg Lawler, featuring nods to their shared passion for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Before the evening's end, Gabe delivered a moving speech, entirely in Spanish, to thank his parents for their unwavering support as a same-sex couple. It was a moment of gratitude and celebration, acknowledging the significant support they had received from Gabe's Mexican immigrant parents, in a culture where such acceptance can still be rare.
A breathtaking canvas portrait of the couple, created by the talented artist Daniel Jose Cabrera Castro, adorned the fireplace mantle, serving as a visual centerpiece.
The couple's passion for music was reflected in their thoughtfully curated reception playlist, and a 20-minute dance set kicked off the festivities, setting the tone for an evening of celebration. An outfit change for the after-party added an extra layer of fun, with bold shirts, pants, shoes, and stylish hats to dance the night away, concluding with Donna Summer's iconic “Last Dance.”
Gabe and Steve offered this valuable advice to couples embarking on wedding planning: “Cherish the time spent planning together and don't simply delegate all the details. The memories created in the planning process are as meaningful as the wedding day itself.”
